Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) metabolic disease that occurs when your body is unable to properly process or regulate the glucose (blood sugar) derived from food.
What causes diabetes?
When we eat, our body converts food into glucose (energy). To deliver this glucose to the body's cells, the pancreas produces a hormone called insulin. Diabetes involves two conditions:
Main Types of Diabetes
- Type 1 Diabetes: The body produces no insulin at all. It is an autoimmune condition.
- Type 2 Diabetes: The most common type, where the body is unable to use insulin effectively or does not produce enough insulin.
- Gestational Diabetes: Diabetes that develops during pregnancy.
Common Symptoms
Extreme thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurry vision, slow-healing sores, numbness in hands or feet.
Management & Care
Blood Glucose Monitoring: Checking blood sugar regularly to keep levels within a targeted range.
Healthy Diet: Focusing on balanced nutrition, managing carbohydrate intake, and staying hydrated.
Physical Activity: Regular exercise helps the body use insulin more effectively and lowers blood sugar.
Medication: Depending on the type and severity, management may include oral medications or insulin injections.
